ERCOT Expects No Power Issues This Winter

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas expects to have enough power to warm Texans this winter.

That's true as long as power generation outages fall within anticipated levels and if the weather conditions are relatively normal for that time of year.

According to ERCOT, the Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy, or SARA,  projects more than 74,200 megawatts (MW) of power to be available to meet an anticipated peak demand of about 58,000 MW during the winter months.

One megawatt is enough power to serve about 500 homes during mild weather conditions and about 200 homes during high-demand summer months.

"Winter in the ERCOT region typically does not drive electric use to the levels the grid experiences during summer, and we don't expect to have problems keeping up with anticipated demand," said Warren Lasher, ERCOT's director of system planning. "However, if we experience record-breaking weather conditions and more generation outages than typically occur this time of year, ERCOT may need to reduce customer demand at some point during the weather event to protect the grid."

ERCOT said they reached their all-time winter peak record on Feb. 10, 2011, when demand hit 57,315 MW.

After winter, ERCOT also expects to have sufficient power generation between March and May.

"Generators typically bring many plants off-line for maintenance early in the spring when weather is mild," said Lasher. "As long as most of those plants are back in operation before the weather warms up later in the spring, we should be in good shape."

In a news release Thursday, ERCOT said "both seasonal assessments incorporate updated information on projected generation availability, weather projections, economic forecasts and other data to define a likely range of electric supply and demand scenarios. ERCOT will assess any changes to the spring forecast prior to release of the final spring assessment on March 1."

Dallas DA to Pursue Charge Against Bryant

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said it will pursue a misdemeanor domestic violence charge against Dez Bryant after an incident in mid-July at his mother's DeSoto home.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office said on Wednesday that it will pursue a misdemeanor family violence charge against Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant.

District Attorney Craig Watkins said Wednesday afternoon that his office has accepted the charge against Bryant and that a court date will be set.

However, Watkins said his office could still decide to handle the charge differently in the future. In other words, the DA's office could still drop the charge or reach a plea deal, just as prosecutors could in any criminal case.

"We had to do our due diligence and investigate," Watkins said. "We did that, and we determined that this a charge we need to pursue. That's not to say that down the line we may make a different determination, but at this point we are pursuing the charges against Dez Bryant."

Bryant was arrested in July on suspicion of misdemeanor family violence against his mother, Angela Bryant. He was arrested on July 16, two days after an incident at his mother's DeSoto home.

According to DeSoto police, Angela Bryant's shirt and bra were ripped and her son slapped her in the face with a baseball hat.

At a press conference 10 days after the incident, Dez and Angela Bryant sat next to each other. Their attorney, Royce West, said that a disagreement happened, but that Dez Bryant did not commit family violence against his mother.

Angela Bryant signed an affidavit saying that she did not wish to pursue charges against her son.

In late July, the district attorney's office said it would review and investigate the case and decide whether to pursue the charge.

Watkins said it is not unusual for victims to sign affidavits not wishing to pursue charges when a family member is involved. However, it is up to his office to determine what is best for the public, he said.

"We have a responsibility to the public," Watkins said. "In this case, we will do what's necessary to protect the public."

NBC 5's calls for comment and reaction from Bryant's attorney, Royce West, were not returned on Wednesday.

So far, there is no court listing for Dez Bryant, according to the Dallas County's online court docket.

Police have canceled an Amber Alert for a 4-year-old Tyler boy who was missing after his mother was shot to death.

James Calvert, 41, father of 4-year-old Lucas Calvert has been arrested in Louisiana.

Police in Monroe, La., tried to pull over a car matching the description of Calvert's Buick. Calvert led authorities on a short chase that ended in a crash. Officers found the boy unharmed in the backseat and his father behind the wheel, along with two guns inside the vehicle.

Calvert was booked into a jail in West Monroe, La., and will be transported to Tyler on a $2 million bond, according to police.

According to KETK-TV in Tyler, the boy was reported missing after the boy's mother, Jelena Calvert, was found fatally shot in the 3300-block of Bain Place.

Police issued a capital murder arrest warrant for James Calvert on Wednesday night.

KETK reported that the couple were in an ongoing custody battle.

The couple's other child, a 5-year-old who attends Woods Elementary School, is under police protection, KETK reported.

Calvert's charges in Texas are for capital murder and kidnapping. He now faces charges in Louisiana for evading arrest.

Single-serve coffeemakers that use coffee pods are gaining in popularity, and everyone wants a piece of the market, including Starbucks. Consumer Reports just tested the Starbucks Verismo machine and 21 others, costing from $25 to $300.

Testers found the fastest will rush you your caffeine in about a minute. But the Hamilton Beach Personal Cup 4997 took 3 minutes to deliver that first cup.

As for the Starbucks Verismo machine, you can make Starbucks' espresso, café latte, and brewed coffee, but it's pricey. It starts at $200, and it's pretty basic. For example, you can't adjust brew strength, and the manual says you should flush the machine with water after each brew.

The NBC 5 Investigates Consumer Unit reached out to Starbucks. The coffee company stands by the Verismo saying it is the only high-pressure, premium single-cup machine that produces Starbucks quality expresso beverages and coffees that consumers can make at home.

Far better for less, says Consumer Reports, is a $150 DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Circolo. It brews a cup in a minute and makes cappuccinos, espressos, and other drinks as well. If you want a smaller pod coffeemaker that takes up less counter space, Consumer Reports recommends the Piccolo in the DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce Gusto line that goes for $100.

But be aware—buying a pod machine is just the beginning. The coffee pods can be expensive, up to $1 a cup.

Complete ratings and recommendations on all kinds of products, including appliances, cars & trucks, and electronic gear, are available on Consumer Reports' website.

The driver of a big-rig was killed early Thursday after being ejected from the cab of his truck and hit by a passing pickup.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of a big-rig was driving southbound on U.S. 287 south of Rhome when he struck the trailer of another semi that was facing east at the intersection of 287 and Ramhorn Hill Road.

The driver of the southbound rig lost control of the vehicle and was ejected from the cab.  His rig continued on however, crossing the median and into the northbound lanes of 287 before finally crashing and catching fire on the far side of the highway.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not yet been released, was killed after being struck first by a pickup truck and then a number of other vehicles.  He died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup also lost control of his vehicle, and he also crossed into the northbound lanes of 287 and rolled before coming to a stop about 20 feet from the flaming big rig.  The driver of the pickup truck was transported to an area hospital where his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the east-facing big-rig was not injured.

Traffic Update:

The collision has closed most of U.S. 287 at Tarrant County/Wise County line while officials clear the scene and while HAZMAT crews clean a fuel spill.    One lane of 287 north is open, all southbound lanes are closed.

Commuters were initially advised to take state Highway 114 east to Interstate 35W to bypass the crash, but 114 has also become congested.  Drivers heading into Tarrant County from U.S. 287 or 114 north or west of Rhome are now encouraged to exit either Old Base Road or Farm-to-Market Road 3433.  Both roads will lead to Farm-to-Market Road 718 which will lead to 287 south of the crash.

There has been no estimate given as to when the roadway is expected to reopen.

NBC 5's Keaton Fox and Samantha Davies contributed to this report.

Major League Gaming Returns to Dallas

advertisement

By now, everyone you know is some kind of gamer. Whether it's on your iPhone, xBox 360, Facebook, or even on your TV, there's something out there for all interests and skill levels.

But when you're the best of the best at games like Halo, StarCraft, or Tekken, then you need to head to Major League Gaming.

It's the largest "competitive video game league" and will bring it's fall championship back to Dallas this Nov. 2-4 for a three-day tournament offering up more than $150,000 in prizes.

Yes, people do get paid for playing video games. But it's not as easy as you might think.

Competitive gaming is a growing sport -- they call it an eSport -- with live commentary including play by play style analysis, team-based cooperative matches, and live audiences. They even stream the content online to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. In South Korea, for instance, StarCraft matches can be seen on television channels.

The Dallas stop marks the end of the 2012 Pro Circuit Season for MLG, and it's sure to not disappoint.

Halo fans should already start drooling as Halo 4, a game that's not even out yet, is making a pre-release tournament stop in Dallas. Teams of four will have an exclusive opportunity to play the game before it's release for a chance at $40,000 in prizes.

PlayStation 3 fans will be excited about the other pre-release tournament -- a free-to-enter competition on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Rounding out the tournament play will be StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, League of Legends, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- which is also making it's Pro Circuit debut in Dallas.

Folks who want to watch the gaming in person can buy an on-site ticket for $35 that covers the whole three-day tournament at the Dallas Convention Center.

We've been to a MLG event before, and it's a lot of fun to try out new games on the floor, watch the matches, and hang out with fellow gamers. But, we admit we're total nerds.

If you're interested in the competition, but can't make it out, online viewing of the Dallas event will be available on the official website starting at 5 p.m. on Nov. 2. It's free to watch in standard definition, but you'll have to pony up for HD streams.

Quadruple Shooting, Police Search for Gunman

advertisement

Dallas police are searching for the shooter who killed one man and wounded three others, just hours after a neighborhood Halloween party.

Investigators said Robert McGowans, 57, was gunned down at the Aspen Chase Apartments on the 11000-block of Ferguson Road at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

McGowans died in the breezeway of his apartment, running for his life.  The deadly shooting inside of his apartment sent three others to the hospital.

"It's nonsense, it doesn't need to be in my community.  This is where I live," said neighbor Jeff Cassidy.

Cassidy is struggling to make sense of the violence that unfolded in his apartment complex.  Cassidy had just been hanging out with McGowans at the Aspen Chase Halloween Party Wednesday night.  He never imagined less than four hours later, McGowans would be shot and killed inside of the apartment he shares with his girlfriend.

"Robert was the type of person who would have given you his shirt or coat.  Robert would help you," said Cassidy.

Police said McGowans, a woman, identified as Jerry Kinbrough, and two other men, identified as Ronald Williams and Kevin Summers, had been in the apartment, knew the shooter, and allowed him to come inside.  Gunfire erupted and all four were shot.

McGowans only made it a few steps outside where he collapsed and died.  An ambulance rushed the three other victims to area hospitals.  Kinbrough is listed in fair condition. Summers is listed in serious conditoin and Williams' condition is not yet known.

"I could have been walking home from trick-or-treating with a daughter or friend.  It could have been me.  Very sad," said Cassidy.  "It's scary the world is coming to this, over something probably very stupid."

Cassidy just wants to see the killer caught.  "Someone around here knows who did it.  The police need to find who did it."

One of the victims claims it was a drug deal that turned deadly.  Police are still investigating.

Robert McGowans, murder victim, got out of prison in 2010 and was currently on parole for a robbery out of west texas in 1991 and was considered a violent offender by the state.
