A Richland Hills man called 911 and told the operator that he had carved a pentagram on the back of his 6-year-old son, police say.

Father Accused of Carving Pentagram Into Son

Richland Hills police say Brent Troy Bartel is accused of carving a pentagram on his 6-year-old son's back, telling a 911 dispatcher that he did it because "it's a holy day."

A Richland Hills man has been arrested and charged with assaulting his son after telling a 911 operator he carved a pentagram into his 6-year-old son's back.

Just after midnight Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a home in the 3700 block of Ruth Road after the boy's father, identified by police as Brent Troy Bartel, called 911 and said: "I shed some innocent blood."

When the dispatcher asked what the man meant by that, the man replied: "I inscribed a pentagram on my son."

The dispatcher asked why, and the man said: "It's a holy day."

At the same time, the child's mother called 911 from a neighbor's home and said her husband was hurting their child.

Officers arrived at the home and found the child cold, standing in only pajama pants with a large pentagram carved into his back. The carving covered most of the boy's back, police said.

Officers wrapped the boy in a jacket and turned him over to paramedics.  The child was transported to Cooks Children's Hospital for treatment.  Child Protective Services and a crime victim liaison are working with the boy and his mother.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that the carving wasn't deep enough to require stitches and that the child is expected to physically recover.

At the scene, officers also recovered a box cutter they believe Bartel used to make the carving.

Bartel was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family member.  He is currently being held on $500,000 bond.

The father's call to 911 was placed at 12:10 a.m., just minutes after the day 12-12-12 began.

It is not clear what Bartel meant by calling Wednesday "a holy day."

However, Catholics celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12. And the Dec. 12, 2012, date, along with Dec. 21, 2012, has draw attention from numerologists and those concerned with doomsday prophecy.

Bartel's bizarre behavior has landed him in jail before. He was arrested in 2007, according to the Lancaster New Era. Bartel had been in court to fight at $25 traffic ticket for an illegal turn. Bartel approached the judge, turned over his drivers' license, and proclaimed he's done as a truck driver. He then tried to punch the police officer who gave him the ticket.  It took three officers and an attorney to wrestle him to the floor.

A Fort Worth restaurant that specializes in party catering is losing business after the theft of its customized catering trailer.

Thieves stole the fully equipped food trailer that Chimy's Cerveceria uses to cater gigs all over the Metroplex.

The trailer was taken from the spot where it has sat outside the restaurant for three years without incident.

Surveillance cameras show a small sport utility vehicle pull alongside the trailer at about 4 a.m. The video shows a person get out and work on the trailer's lock before the SUV backs up and takes the trailer.

The trailer has a custom paint job in a loud circus them -- something that is impossible to hide and perhaps even more difficult to sell.

Chimy's general manager Wes Lunsford said the trailer's value, fully equipped, is about $20,000.

The theft is forcing Chimy's to cancel some larger catering jobs over the holidays that would have earned the restaurant the value of the trailer itself several times over.

"We've got caterings lined up for the next two weeks until Christmas and then, obviously, New Year and lots of holiday parties and stuff going on that we usually used that trailer for," Lunsford said.

Whoever stole the vehicle is going to great lengths to hide it, possibly paint it and either start a business of their own or sell it.

All of that adds up to work ethic, said Lunsford.

"Come down and apply for a job -- how about that?" he said. "We've got some catering gigs to do, so we could always use some help."

Chimy's is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the trailer.

CSU Fullerton Slowly Reopens After Hours-Long Lockdown

Students and faculty were allowed to leave Cal State Fullerton just before midnight Wednesday, hours after the university was put on a modified lockdown prompted by two men fleeing onto campus, wanted in connection with an armed robbery that sparked two separate high-speed pursuits. Vikki Vargas reports from Fullerton for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012.

CSU Fullerton Locked Down After High-Speed Chase

A wild police chase that started as a bank robbery in Moreno Valley put Cal State Fullerton on lockdown Wednesday after one of the wanted men fled from the car onto campus. Alex Calder reports from NewsChopper 4 for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012.

Students and faculty were allowed to leave a California university just before midnight Wednesday, hours after California State University, Fullerton was put on a modified lockdown prompted by two men fleeing onto the campus, wanted in connection with an armed robbery that sparked two separate high-speed pursuits.

Three men were taken into custody earlier Wednesday following separate car chases apparently started after a violent heist at a Southern California pawn shop. At least one man remained at large late Wednesday.

At 11 p.m., the university tweeted this notice: "Police are beginning to clear building occupants. Please remain in place until directed by Police or audio announcement."

Shortly before midnight, the university tweeted this: "Cal State Fullerton Important Message. All buildings are now clear and occupants are free to leave."

The complicated situation developed after five men wearing ski masks robbed at pawn shop in Moreno Valley at about 3 p.m., shooting an employee of the store. California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call describing the suspect vehicle and pursued it to Fullerton.

At 3:47 p.m., the pursuit ended after the car exited the Orange (57) Freeway and stopped after it was involved in a minor collision in front of the university campus, Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart said during a quickly called news conference about 5

Nearly 10,000 students were at the university preparing for next week's finals when two men fled onto campus, where one was immediately taken into custody. The other man fled into Mihaylo Hall, a 200,000-square-foot building, Stuart said.

The three other man fled southbound from campus. One was taken into custody, and another carjacked a vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest in Watts. The third man from that group remained at large, Stuart said.

SWAT team members were searching the area, he said. A perimeter had been set up to search for the suspect who had fled into the city streets of Fullerton, where it began to rain about 6 p.m.

"We had a large number of students were able to flee the building where the suspect ran into. They've been evacuated from the campus. Those students and staff members that are still on campus are in what's called a shelter in place," Stuart said. "Our goal is to go around and rescue those individuals . as we do our search. This is going to be an all-night operation."

He later added, "It's a huge campus, so it's a very daunting task."

Three buildings on campus were on modified lockdown, where students were told to shelter in place, Stuart said. A student in one of the locked-down buildings said he witnessed officers checking every classroom.

"A cop came running through and he said, 'They have guns, they have guns,'" said another witness, Shant Fermanian. "So all these people started rushing so me and my cousin, we looked up, and we just got out of there as soon we can. We had no idea what was going on."

Fermanian said he saw a man, who was later taken into custody, run around a nearby building but did not see any weapons.

Christine Accetta, locked down in McCarthy Hall, tweeted a photo about 6:30 p.m., pictured below, of a barricade students created inside a classroom. Four hours later, Accetta tweeted: "We have been released!"

Another student, Raquel Mireles, said the university had been regularly in touch with students via text message with updates on the developing situation.

"They're just trying ... to keep us safe," Mireles said, who said she was in College Park. "They're being really helpful. The cops have come through and told us to stay calm."

She said the blinds had been closed in the classroom she was in, and chairs had been placed in front of the door.

"The lights are off. We're kind of just all huddled together right now," Mireles said.

While she talked on air to NBC4, a loudspeaker announcement told her to evacuate the building.

The five men allegedly robbed a pawn shop in Moreno Valley in the 24500 block of Sunnymead Boulevard (map) around 3 p.m. Authorities there said the men wore ski masks and used handguns.

An employee at the store was shot; he was in stable condition, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Department Deputy Albert Martinez. He said it remains unclear what, if anything, was stolen from the store.

After the sheriff's department put out a description of the getaway vehicle in Moreno Valley, CHP officers spotted the car and a pursuit began.

Just after the pursuit ended in Fullerton, one of the men car-jacked another vehicle, prompting a second chase, which wound through freeways and surface streets. The driver blew through several stop signs and red lights in residential areas of Compton.

The man abandoned his stolen car in Watts and ran through a crowded area before surrendering -- spread eagle, as shown at right -- on a baseball field at Imperial Courts Recreation Center at 2250 E. 114th St. (map).

The recreation center is surrounded by Imperial Courts, a nearly 500-unit public housing project, and was hosting a toy drive held by the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was among those in attendance and immediately began chasing the man as he headed toward the baseball diamond, away from dozens of police officers gathered at the park.

That driver was taken into custody.

Dallas police are asking for the public's help in finding whoever beat a corporate attorney so badly that he is now in a medically induced coma.

James Porter, a bartender at the Crown and Harp bar, found 39-year-old Damien Falgoust on Greenville Avenue, just north of Ross, early Friday morning.

"I called 911 and put the gentleman on his side -- he was lying on his back," Porter said. "I ran in and got some towels to put under his head."

Relatives said Falgoust was at the Knox Street Pub earlier that night. Friends saw him leave in a taxi at about 1:30 a.m. He was discovered unconscious outside the Crown and Harp 30 minutes later.

Paramedics were able to get Falgoust alert and talking at the scene.

"He was saying, 'I just want to go home. I just want to go home. I live right around the corner, and I want to go home,'" Porter said. "The firefighters were smart enough to know that he wasn't."

According to online updates posted by his sister, Falgoust is in a medically induced coma with multiple skull fractures and severe bleeding on his brain.

Dallas police said they don't believe robbery was a motive for the attack because Falgoust still had his cellphone and wallet on him at the hospital.

Friends from the kickball team Falgoust plays on are planning a fundraiser for Sunday. They have also set up an online account to raise money for his medical care.

Midlothian police are looking for a man who drove a stolen vehicle into four other cars, then ran on foot Thursday morning.

According to police, someone drove a pickup into a local convenience store, stole cigarettes and took off at about 4 a.m. in Midlothian.

Soon after, a police officer tried stopping a black Chevrolet pickup that matched the description of the vehicle used in the convenience store robbery. The pickup had been reported stolen in Ellis County at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night, police said.

The pickup took off, leading police on a chase through the streets of Midlothian. The chase ended on the 600-block of E. Ave F after the truck smashed into four parked cars and wound up on the lawn of one of a home.

No one was injured.

The driver fled on foot, leading police on a manhunt through the neighborhood. Ellis County Sheriffs brought in K-9 units to help search, but did not find the man.

Police say they found a pistol inside the vehicle.

Police say they have good evidence about the identity of the driver and have called off the search.

Google Maps Returns to iPhone

advertisement

Driving just got a whole lot easier for Apple lovers.

Late Wednesday, Google announced it revamped its map app for the iPhone, which will now do what drivers had hoped it would do on its original – and awful – version: Talk you through your route with a robotic voice, instead of forcing you to look down in your lap for the turn-by-turn directions.

"We started from scratch," said Daniel Graf, mobile director of Google Maps, adding that there is no animosity with Apple over this issue. "On maps, we have a friendly relationship."

The news is huge for iPhone users, who love their phones but had hated the navigational options provided to them.

In mid-September, Apple had dumped the first-version of Google Maps from its phone.

Then, of course, there was the Apple Maps flap. Apple's app is still so bad that just this week the Australian police issued a warning to folks not to use it, calling it "life threatening," because the system was steering people looking for the city of Midura into a sweltering dessert 44 miles from their desired destination. And closer to home in San Jose – just a stone's throw from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino – the Apple Maps app still says that if you're at the corner of Branham and Meridian avenues, you are at Valley Christian High School, when you are actually at Branham High School.

Heads rolled at Apple because of it. Last month, Apple fired Richard Williamson, the manager responsible for the ridiculed app.

And even before that in September, Tim Cook issued a rare apology. Some say it was the worst moment in Apple history.

Apple is still working on its own maps app, and there's no telling when it may come out and how good it might be.

But for now, iPhone users can download the new Google maps on their phones and expect to get to Grandma's house in time for dinner with no wrong turns.

Google Maps is free for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's not yet available for the iPad, but you can download the phone version onto the tablet.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
