One man is dead and police are searching for the gunman after a shooting outside a popular pub Thursday morning.

The shooting happened at Sherlock's Pub on North Central Expressway and Park Lane just before 1 a.m.

Bar workers say a group of friends had been leaving the pub, when a gunman confronted them in the parking lot and tried to rob them. The victim, Donald Morrow, 36, fought back and it turned out to be a deadly decision.

Police arrived at the bar and discovered Morrow shot dead right outside of the Sherlock's Pub patio.

Investigators say the armed robber demanded property from Morrow, another man and a woman with him.  Police say Morrow tried to hit the gunman.  He was shot in the head right in front of friends and customers.

The gunman ran off. Officers have been driving witnesses to the police department for questioning.  Police do have a good description of the shooter, but are not releasing a lot of details.  He's described as a dark skinned man.

The man and woman with Morrow were not hurt.

Detectives are investigating Morrow's death as a murder and are asking any other witnesses to come forward to help catch the gunman.

A Plano Independent School District elementary school coach is on paid leave after he was accused of indecency with a child.

Todd Alan Reich, 38, was booked into the Collin County Jail on Tuesday on one count of indecency with a child by sexual contact.

Reich bonded out on Wednesday.

The website of Martha Hunt Elementary School, which is in Murphy, lists Reich as a PE coach.

On Wednesday, parents received a note from the school and district about the investigation.

Mike Graves, the parent of a second-grader at Hunt Elementary, said he was shocked.

"I'm totally blown away," he said. "I can't believe that something like this actually happened. This is, I mean, it's close to home."

The investigation comes just two years after another Hunt Elementary teacher was accused of similar charges with another student.

Joseph Peter Garbarini was later sentenced to more than 60 years in prison.

PISD provided a copy of the note to parents:

Dear Parents,

In an effort to keep our families informed, I am writing to share information regarding a matter that we are managing at our school. We were notified last night of the arrest of a Hunt Elementary School employee by the Collin County Sheriff's Department. An investigation regarding alleged inappropriate behavior with a former student is ongoing and details remain confidential.

Hunt Elementary and Plano ISD administrators are working in full cooperation with local authorities, and the teacher has been placed on administrative leave. We are committed to continuing to provide an outstanding education to all of our students and will minimize any impact this transition may have on them.

Our team at Hunt Elementary would like you to know that the security of our students is of the utmost importance and we feel it is imperative to keep the lines of communication with our families open as we work together to maintain an environment of trust and safety. We will keep you informed appropriately as details become available. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call on us. Any information regarding this investigation should be forwarded to the Murphy Police Department at 972.468.4200. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our school focused on learning.

Luck may be running out for teams of thieves that break into sport utility vehicles across the Dallas area.

Surveillance video shows how thieves can steal third-row seats from SUVs in just seconds.

Video from James Roberts, who lives on Hyde Park Drive in Lake Highlands, shows thieves stealing the seating from his Yukon last week in broad daylight.

On the video, one of crooks can be seen coming over and scoping out the SUV. He then waves over his partner to bring a tool that unlocks the back glass without sounding the alarm.

Once the glass is open, a third and smaller crook climbs inside, grabs the seats and off they go.

Detectives said the thieves work in groups and target neighborhoods with a high concentration of General Motors SUVs.

Roberts said the scariest part about the brazen burglary is what isn't seen on the surveillance video.

"What you don't see on the video is that my wife and daughter come out, really, just 10, 15 seconds after the break in occurs," he said. "The guys had just pulled off. It's fairly interesting and scary."

More than 50 third-row seats were stolen this summer in Dallas and the Park Cities.

Highland Park police arrested two thieves in the act in August, and the thefts seemed to slow down.

Police said the latest burglary is further proof that more than one group is targeting third-row seating in Dallas.

A North Texas man is charged with bigamy, accused of having two unsuspecting wives in two Tarrant County cities.

Germaine Gardea, 38, lived in Grapevine with his first wife until May, when she found out he had another wife in Arlington.

He was arrested and charged with bigamy after the first wife alerted police. She found out what was happening when Gardea's second wife called her after discovering that Gardea was paying her bills.

Investigators say Gardea married his second wife on the same day he filed for divorce from the first but then didn't show up for the hearing.

Police said Gardea lived with both for almost three years. Investigators said he was able to pull it off because he traveled so much for his job.

Until about six months ago, he was a flight instructor for a company based at the Grand Prairie Airport.

Now, his first wife has filed for divorce.

Gardea posted a $2,000 bond to get out of jail. In returning a request for comment he said he's "trying to put all this behind me" and refused further comment.

Fort Worth Warning Sirens Malfunction

advertisement

A rude awakening overnight Thursday for likely thousands of Fort Worth residents, as the emergency siren system in the city rang out at approximately 1:30 a.m.

The cause of the sirens was a malfunction, according to Juan Ortiz, the Emergency Management Coordinator for Fort Worth.  And the malfunction appears to have triggered all of the approximately 150 sirens that the city is responsible for, Ortiz said.

"This is the first time that the system has had this type of malfunction," Ortiz told NBC 5.

As of Thursday morning, the exact cause of the malfunction had not yet been determined, Ortiz said.

The sirens were triggered shortly after 1:30 a.m., and sounded for upwards of two minutes, according to multiple sources.

Calls flooded the NBC 5 newsroom from startled viewers about the sirens, coming in from locations near the campus of Texas Christian University, Benbrook and Burleson.

The Fort Worth office of the National Weather Service tweeted about the sirens shortly after the incident.

"The Outdoor Warning Siren at our office went off at 135am. Be advised, there is NO hazardous weather/events in the area! #txwx"

The concern that is most troubling for those investigating the cause, aside from the actual cause of the malfunction, is that any malfunction may lead to a "Boy who cried wolf" scenario.

"Anytime that the system malfunctions it jeopardizes the integrity of the goal, which is to alert and warn citizens of an emergency or impending disaster," Ortiz told NBC 5.

In order to determine the cause of the malfunction, the system's automatic function has been disabled, meaning they would not automatically be triggered if an actual emergency were to arise.  Ortiz said that while that is the case, there will be a person at the controls who can manually set off the sirens in the event of true danger.

A Texas Department of Public Safety patrolman shot at a fleeing vehicle Thursday morning, after being assaulted, a DPS spokesman said.

The man, 27-year-old Samuel Pereira Mendoza, was seen speeding on the Dallas North Tollway by the trooper at about 2:30 a.m.

Mendoza stopped along Northwest Highway and Hathaway. When the trooper walked up to the car to talk to Mendoza, he "developed suspicion" that Mendoza was drunk, said DPS spokesman Trooper Lonny Haschel.

Mendoza began assaulting the trooper, hitting him with the trooper's flashlight. The trooper tried using pepper spray and a Taser, but wasn't successful.

That's when Mendoza took off and the trooper opened fire. He shot out two tires and hit the vehicle's bumper, Haschel said.

Mendoza gave up at Preston Lane and Park Lane and was arrested.

The trooper has facial injuries and was checked out at a local hospital.

No one else was injured.

Mendoza is now facing charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault on a police officer, and evading arrest.

Newsweek Ending Print Edition After 80-Year Run

advertisement

Newsweek is going out of print and all-in on digital.

The magazine will keep publishing online as a single, worldwide edition called Newsweek Global, with the shift to an all-digital format after 80 years in print set to start in early 2013.

"We are transitioning Newsweek, not saying goodbye to it," Newsweek and Daily Beast editor-in-chief Tina Brown wrote Thursday on The Daily Beast. "We remain committed to Newsweek and to the journalism that it represents."

Newsweek will produce its last U.S. print edition for the Dec. 31 issue and plans to support Newsweek Global on tablets, e-readers and the web with paid subscriptions. Some Newsweek content will be available on the The Daily Beast, which is also owned by the magazine's parent company IAC.

Brown wrote that "regrettably" there would be layoffs as a result of streamlining editorial and business operations in the U.S. and overseas. She said the move "is an extremely difficult moment for all of us who love the romance of print."

In a note to staff, Brown and Daily Beast CEO Baba Shetty wrote: "We realize news of a big change like this will be unsettling. We wish to reassure you the transition is well planned, extremely mindful of the unavoidable impact on our staff and respectful of our readers, advertisers and business partners."

Newsweek's losses have reportedly run about $40 million a year, according to The New York Times. The magazine's print circulation has tumbled 51 percent since 2007, industry website Poynter.org reported, citing the publisher's statement filed with the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Newsweek's move to drop its print edition wasn't entirely unexpected. Back in July, IAC head Barry Diller hinted during an earnings call that the publication would become digital only.

In announcing the change, Brown wrote that Newsweek content has helped drive a 70 percent increase in unique visitors to The Daily Beast website over the past year.

She wrote that tablet users in the U.S. were expected to top 70 million this year, up from 13 million two years ago.

"In our judgment, we have reached a tipping point at which we can most efficiently and effectively reach our readers in all-digital format," Brown wrote. "This was not the case just two years ago. It will increasingly be the case in the years ahead."

Here's how the news unfolded on Twitter:
